In the Spring of 1820, the Giffords
consisted of 26-year old Alpheus Gifford and his wife, 20-year old Anna (Nash)
Gifford, then the parents of 2 year-old Mary Elizabeth Gifford and 6-month old
Ichabod Bowerman Gifford.
Ichabod’s birth 14 Sep 1819 in
Covington, Tioga County, PA, was just six months before Spring of 1820, so if
Giffords had not moved, they would have been living over 100 miles south of
Palmyra, NY.
If they had already moved to where
third child Samuel Kendall Gifford was born 11 Nov 1821 in Milo, Yates County,
NY, they would have been 60 miles closer, just 40 miles south of Palmyra.
Since Alpheus was more tuned in than
most to the saving of souls, and was geographically closest to Palmyra, he was well
positioned to be the first of the 14 families to hear of the Prophet
Joseph.
